Production of wool yarn with different percentages of fibers of vegetable origin

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

To create innovative yarns for apparel made of wool fibers and cellulosic or protein fibers, using a purposely modified worsted spinning machine.

ABSTRACT

The developed yarns have a wool basic structure, while the cellulosic or protein fibers give comfort, wearability and new aesthetic effects, in addition to the natural characteristics of each single fiber.
The best results were obtained with:

•    Bamboo fibers mixed with wool
•    Casein fibers mixed with wool
•    Rose fibers mixed with wool.

The yarns made from rose fibers protect the skin from UV and IR radiation and are extremely soft; the bamboo fiber is a natural antibacterial while the fiber obtained from milk gently nourishes the skin.
The yarns contain up to 30% of cellulosic or protein fibers, they are easily processed and they con be used to obtain special and innovative knitting and weaving products. After further studies and development, the yarns are currently on the market.
